Career Shifting

Is it possbile and reasonable to swtich careers in midlife if you are unhappy with what you have been doing for work for a period of a decade or more?

Of course it is!  If we believe that we deserve to engage in work that we love, then there is no doubt.

Each of us really owes it to ourselves to be as happy in our work lives as we are our personal lives.  So rather than spend any additional time being unhappy in a situation where you undoubedtedly spend an awful lot of time, consider looking into the job of your dreams.

And okay, if not one of “your dreams,” then at least get closer to doing work you enjoy.  You owe it to yourself to get up in the morning and approach the day with an excitement, looking forward to the possibilities of the day.

How do you do that?  If you can’t or won’t engage in a process that begins with taking an official assessment, such as The Birkman, which I feel is the best for this purpose, then at minimum begin an inward analysis.  Ask yourself questions such as “what would I do all day if I had everything I needed or wanted?”  Make that a list by which you compare all your choices. Take your time to complete this list accurately and authentically.

Then, Network, network, network!!! Meet with those already working in the arena of your choice and pick their brain.  How did they get there, what is necessary to gain entry into such a field or company?  What do you need that may be of assistance, in the way of further education or training?  What other advice have they for someone looking to make that transition? People want to help you, they are complimented by the fact that you are looking for their unique feedback and assistance.  And they understand and relate to your quest to do meaningful work.  Don’t neglect to invite them to call on you should there be some way that you can reciprocate in the future and help them.Image result for free photos of career moves

Trust yourself and trust the process.  Mostly, be clear on the absolute fact that you truly deserve to do work that connects you to your heart!! It really is the way to happiness and success!!
