Do You Know Your Type?
How can you best ensure your needs are met?
They are referred to by many names— personality preferences, communication styles, motivational needs, behavior types.¬† These are scientifically validated and reliable assessments that identify our basic¬†style, not only the way we show up but how our behavior is linked to our fundamental needs and orientations/ interests.
Those of us who work with assessments learn that when interests exceed a certain level (usually measured on scale of 1-10), those particular interests are actually needs.  They  demand expression in our life.  In fact, we are frustrated if there is no such expression.  And getting clear on the kind of environment that is best suited to us is critically important in considering a career path or contemplating a career shift.  It may also have significance beyond our work life.
Once we are aware of our needs, we are also aware of how our uniqueness may differ from someone else and in that moment, there is almost a simultaneous¬†acceptance and mutual honoring of “differences.”¬† In that kind of understanding,¬†we can find ourselves more receptive to paying heed to what the reports say about us –about our needs.¬† It may be only a confirmation, something we have always known but somehow with¬†it facing us in black and white, we feel a sense of validation and confidence in making decisions that serve our particular “type.”
Do we all need to have an assessment in order to uncover our profile and facilitate our decision-making on work and personal matters?  Probably not, but in all the years that I have been privileged to help others with their own self-awareness, I have not known a single person who has not benefitted in some way by participating in the process, in knowing and honoring their own motivational needs.
