Is There A Way to Do What You Love?
Do we believe that we actually can do what we love, assuming we identify what that is?
There are resources we can access to clarify what we need to be happy in our worklife, which also has implications for our personal life. If you are not sure or do not know of appropriate resources, consider looking into personal surveys or questionnaires or validated reliable instruments (by the American Psychological Association) designed to help uncover your preferences. Most of the time, the results merely validate what we already know about ourselves. For some of us, however, the results could reveal what we had been unwilling to admit to ourselves, for whatever reason. Such reports could shine a light on something we had managed to have buried beneath expectations of well-intentioned authority figures such as parents and teachers.
I’ve seen it all. I have been conducting sessions, both one on one and group that include these types of generated reports for career clarification purposes. If you are wondering about those who could or would be able to help you, please consider the Birkman Method. It is one that I have successfully used to help numerous professionals for twenty years.
Please do not think that there is no passion for you in work terms and that work is merely something you have to do to earn a living! You could and should love what you do for work–you deserve to do what you love, in fact!!! Selecting a profession that aligns with your heart is both a privilege and your birthright.
There is a good book I read long ago when I first came into this line of assessment consulting work by Marsha Sinetar, Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow. In it, she affirms what we know to be true: That when we are doing what we love, there is a greater chance that we will achieve both happiness and success. And since success is at least partly measured in monetary terms, why not have it all??!!
Here’s to doing what we love and loving what we do!!!
